Working At Home With One Less Dog
This is a hard post to write. I’ve been working at home with three dogs for the past few months and prior to getting the new puppy we had two dogs: Spunky and Toni. Spunky spent the day laying on the dog bed in the office and Toni has a ramp and a stool where she likes to sleep under her blanket. Last Monday Spunky became very ill. He was walking in tight circles. He couldn’t walk straight. He had a recurring ear infection and we cleaned his ears. He got worse. We rushed him to the vet and in the end he could not be cured. It wasn’t an ear infection… he had a brain tumor or lesion that had been causing symptoms the vet said was normal aging. We had to send Spunky over the rainbow bridge last Wednesday.
I bring this up because many of us work at home with pets and taking care of them is intertwined with our daily work tasks. What do you do when you need to work but you’re snowed under by such grief that you can’t breathe sometimes? How do you deal with customers when you can’t stop crying? If you’re lucky like me you have understanding clients who give you some space. If your clients are demanding or unsympathetic then you might need to take some time off. There isn’t any good answer to how you keep working and living while you grieve but the one thing I’m trying to do is put one foot in front of the other. That’s a good start.

Spunky visiting the beach last summer. Rest in peace sweet boy.
