You&#8217;re hoping,  with crossed-fingers that something will change and you will wake up one  day and you won&#8217;t be so displeased.</p>
<p>Have you ever noticed that you don&#8217;t have any problems getting out of  bed on days that you have off?  You are cheerful, happy and ready to get  your day started.  But when a working day comes around, you&#8217;re pulling  your hair out just to spark some kind of motivation to get out of bed.  Is that you?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;ve ever run across the old joke that &#8220;fish&#8221; should actually be spelled &#8220;ghoti&#8221; (&#8220;gh&#8221; as in &#8220;tough,&#8221; &#8220;o&#8221; as in &#8220;women&#8221; and &#8220;ti&#8221; as in &#8220;nation&#8221;), then you won&#8217;t be surprised to know that many companies put this quirk of the English language to work by concocting an alternate spelling of a key word for their name. This associates their organization with a certain quality while standing out with a unique-looking name.</p>
<p>Examples of creatively spelled names that sound like a real word include:</p>
<p># Acxiom</p>
<p># Cinergy Health Chempetitive</p>
<p># Enalasys</p>
<p># Engauge</p>
<p># Flikr</p>
<p># Genesys</p>
<p>However, the perils of this strategy are many. First, sometimes not everyone understands the original word, as with &#8220;axiom&#8221; and &#8220;synergy.&#8221; In that case, the intended implication of the company name gets even more lost with the creative spelling.</p>
<p>Second, many of the creative spellings are extremely hard to remember accurately. I&#8217;m quite sure I could never remember how to spell Enalasys, even if I remembered that it sounded like &#8220;analysis&#8221; and started with an &#8220;E.&#8221; There are two additional spelling changes in that eight-letter name. Note that on the Internet, someone who gets your company&#8217;s spelling only partially right will not find your web site and may not be able to get email through to your employees.</p>
<p>Third, these names can be difficult to pronounce when seeing them &#8220;cold.&#8221; This point gets overlooked because a popular site like Flikr has many people talking about it, and once you&#8217;ve heard there&#8217;s a photo-sharing site called &#8220;flicker,&#8221; you readily understand that that&#8217;s how the name is said. But just from looking at the name, you might equally want to pronounce it as &#8220;Fly-ker&#8221; &#8211; or just be struck silent at the unfamiliar sequence of &#8220;k-r&#8221; at the end of the name. Likewise, I&#8217;m not sure from the spelling whether &#8220;Genesys&#8221; is supposed to be pronounced like the English word &#8220;genesis&#8221; or like the separate parts &#8211; &#8220;Jean-sis&#8221; (which emphasizes the component word &#8220;gene&#8221;).</p>
<p>Fourth, creatively spelled names with a double meaning like Chempetitive (sounds like &#8220;competitive&#8221; but suggests chemicals) or Engauge (sounds like &#8220;engage&#8221; but suggests measurement as in &#8220;gauge&#8221;) do not easily pass the telephone test. Their significance doesn&#8217;t come across to the ear. That is, someone hearing &#8220;Competitive&#8221; wouldn&#8217;t suspect the connection to chemicals &#8211; or the correct spelling.</p>
<p>And fifth, when you have a creatively spelled name, it becomes tiresome to spell it out every single time you say it to a new vendor or potential client. Take it from someone blessed with the last name of Yudkin!</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a visual person, thinking mainly of how a company name might look on signage and a logo, you might value these names highly because of their distinctive eye appeal. However, it would be a mistake to forget about all the business situations in which communication happens primarily by ear.</p>
<p>With a sizeable marketing budget, you can overcome these disadvantages to a certain extent, drilling the correct spelling and punctuation into the minds of the public. After all, most people got it that AT&amp;T&#8217;s wireless company was pronounced &#8220;singular&#8221; but spelled with a &#8220;C.&#8221; But if you have a limited marketing budget, it&#8217;s best to select a new company name that can be understood right off correctly by both the eye and the ear.</p>

Getting good results with a classified ad isn&#8217;t as simple as it seems. There is more to it than just writing two or three lines of copy and placing it in the local shopping digest or weekly newspaper. A well-written ad in the wrong publication or under a wrong headline or a poorly written ad in the right publication will not get you the desired results.</p>
<p>Follow the tips we’ve outlined below when you develop a classified advertisement for a small business:</p>
<p>o	Choose the right publication: Target your customers and post the ad in publications that they are likely to read. For example, a classified advertisement for a small business that is into beauty therapy or pet grooming is likely to receive a better response when placed in journals favored by upper-class communities.</p>
<p>o	Do your homework: Look at other samples of classified advertisements for a small business that appear in the local media consistently week after week. What is it about certain messages that catch your attention? What sets them apart? Is it the way they are worded or placed or did you perceive value in the benefit that is being promised? Analyze these ads and incorporate their best features into yours.</p>
<p>o	Think through your content: Before writing out a classified advertisement for a small business, one must know exactly what it is one wants to sell. Make sure the communication is very clear and specific.  Once you have determined your message, draft it out in one or more complete sentences. Then, prune it to make it concise and effective. Be sure to include a phone number or other contact information.</p>
<p>o	Make the first few words count: The first couple of words in a classified advertisement for a small business are equivalent to a headline in a newspaper. They should arrest the readers’ attention immediately and make them want to go further. In order to do that, those words must tell readers the most important benefit of your product or service upfront.</p>
<p>o	Proofread carefully: Proofread the copy for typographical and grammatical errors very carefully. Just because it is a classified advertisement for a small business, and not a full blown campaign featuring a big brand, does not mean it can be dealt with casually. A badly written piece will certainly harm your reputation and make your business look shoddy. If you have drafted the lines, it is better to have someone else proofread the final version.</p>
<p>o	Look at where your competitors are: Advertise in the same publications favored by your competitors. Look through the back issues of any journal that you are considering advertising in. If your rivals have been advertising consistently in that publication, your message should be in there as well.</p>
<p>o	Test your advertisement in several publications: Place your ad in different publications to test which ones work for you. Use the same body copy in all of them. Run each one long enough to give it a fair try. Having your business ad appear on a regular basis builds name recognition and convinces prospective customers to trust you.</p>
<p>Even though internet advertising is here to stay, old-fashioned print ads can still produce results as long as you use them effectively. Remember there are still thousands of people who have no access to the internet and who depend on local newspapers and yellow pages to find the products and services they need. A classified advertisement for a small business can help bridge this gap very nicely indeed. What’s more, it is a fairly inexpensive way for small businesses to market themselves.</p>

<p>Many think they are not well enough educated, come from a poor background which holds them back, or think they need loads of money to get started in a new small business venture.</p>
<p>Let me show you why I think these are not true.</p>
<p>Lack Of Education</p>
<p>Many believe you need a good education to make a lot of money or to start up successful small businesses.</p>
<p>Far from being held back by poor education, it may actually be an advantage. Just as blind people often have much better hearing, people who have less education often compensate in other ways.</p>
<p>They may communicate more effectively to a wider population, they often exhibit greater dexterity and ability working with a wide range of materials and have great ability to judge risk and reward.</p>
<p>A good education can even be shown to be a disadvantage to entrepreneurship.</p>
<p>It is normal for well-educated people to find it easy to get a job. This means they are making money for someone else, in exchange for a smaller proportion of money back. (If employers didn&#8217;t make more money from their workers than they paid them, then they couldn&#8217;t continue to employ them.)</p>
<p>Having had a good job for a while, to give it up on a small business enterprise usually means risking losing that job, and the money that comes in with it, which may be needed to start the new venture. This brings us to another myth-<br />
<span id="more-926"></span><br />
Lack Of Capital</p>
<p>Many believe you can&#8217;t start a new moneymaking venture without a lot of money to get started. I don&#8217;t believe this!</p>
<p>The old saying &#8220;If you ain&#8217;t got nothing you ain&#8217;t got nothing to lose&#8221; really is true.</p>
<p>If you have a lot to lose by risking a new small business venture, you may be so cautious of failure that you fail to succeed.</p>
<p>So many seriously rich people started from flat broke or in many cases from serious debt, you have to conclude that a lot of capital is not necessary.</p>
<p>J. K Rowling is one of the richest individuals in the UK. While she was writing her first novel she had barely the price of a good meal to sustain her. She even had to type the book out twice (with a second hand typewriter!) to send a copy to the publishers because she couldn&#8217;t afford to have a photocopy done.</p>
<p>Living In A Poor Environment</p>
<p>Many believe you need to come from a rich background to become rich. Baloney!</p>
<p>People have worked their way up from living in tin shacks to owning hotel chains. It is just as easy to sell goods to people in the ghetto as it is in the richest street in town.</p>
<p>Indeed it is often much more profitable to sell cheaper goods than more expensive goods.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a few examples-</p>
<p>·	Burger vans have far higher profit margins than many top restaurants.<br />
·	Skateboards often have far higher profit margins than cars.<br />
·	A bicycle sales and repair shop would find far more customers in a poor environment than in a rich one.<br />
·	Trades and services (plumbers, electricians, decorators) will be more likely to succeed with the low costs of the poor environment and traveling to a better environment to provide those services.</p>
<p>Poor Education, No Capitol AND a Poor Environment!</p>
<p>A few examples of people who succeeded with their small businesses may help to prove my point.</p>
<p>With all three &#8211; poor education, no capitol and a poor environment, one guy in Africa has found great success. He lived on what most people reading this would consider to be a rubbish tip, but with very little education and no capitol at all, makes a great living for himself. With no more than a stout pair of ordinary scissors, he turns discarded empty drink cans into really stylish flowers. Selling them to locals and tourists, he makes a fine living.</p>
<p>Now I am not suggesting for a moment that this is a workable small business idea for you, but it does prove my point. If he can be so successful, by his terms, in Africa, then really it can&#8217;t be so hard for you can it?</p>
<p>Another example, which you are equally unlikely to repeat, is that of many &#8216;pop stars&#8217;. I won&#8217;t go into detail here because I prefer not to get sued, but if you look carefully at the early lives of, for example, Madonna, Eminem, Bob Dylan etc. you would find they have bettered themselves considerably with very few external resources.</p>
<p>Lastly, how about Nancy Engel. Starting from flat broke with very little education, she bought $30 worth of assorted spices. Mixing them together, she labeled them Italian Spice Mix and took them to a local flea market the next day. By the end of the day, she&#8217;d sold all her stock and pocketed $200. By repeating this simple formula, her small business is a great success.</p>
<p>What if you are fortunate enough to live in an outstanding environment, have received an excellent education and have access to seemingly limitless funds &#8211; would that ensure success? History is littered with examples of people in just this situation, who started business ventures which failed completely leaving them financially broke.</p>
<p>I believe you are just as likely to succeed, or fail, regardless of your environment, education or funds.</p>
<p>Small Businesses Idea, Plus Action</p>
<p>So enough of what you don&#8217;t need to succeed &#8211; what about what you do need? Almost every example shows that after an idea which the entrepreneur considered worth pursuing, action is required. It sounds obvious, but without action, all you have is an idea, and by themselves, ideas rarely make you successful!</p>
<p>By action I don&#8217;t mean simply telling everyone you know about your idea, I mean actually doing something to make your idea happen.</p>
<p>So now you see why I believe that it is quite normal for people to succeed without access to good education, good environment or good funding.</p>
<p>I believe you can change your life massively with no more than a few good small business ideas and a little action.</p>

John McCain delivered the keynote address at the National Federation of Independent Business 2008 National Small Business Summit last month, he did much more than speak to several hundred interested small business owners. He pushed the concerns of a significant voting bloc to the forefront of the presidential campaigns. In fact, both Sens. McCain and Barack Obama have spent much time specifically addressing the No. 1 issue among small businesses &#8212; healthcare. And it&#8217;s about time.</p>
<p>Recognizing that healthcare costs have become unmanageable for many entrepreneurs, Sen. McCain said, if elected, his administration would introduce healthcare reform that would provide hardworking Americans more options and expand portability of coverage.</p>
<p>Sen. Obama, who was invited to speak at the Summit but did not attend, responded to Sen. McCain&#8217;s remarks by reiterating that small businesses need more options to access quality, affordable healthcare coverage. We also know both candidates recognize that implementing health information technology and addressing an inequitable tax structure should play a part in any comprehensive reform package.</p>
<p>Over the past few weeks, it&#8217;s been encouraging to see the candidates discuss the issues facing the small business, especially the rising cost of healthcare. But they &#8212; and all of our country&#8217;s leaders &#8212; must realize that entrepreneurs deserve more than just discussions. Because the truth is, these job creators, those on the front lines of the healthcare crisis, are the voters who will be electing the next president, and they are demanding the next administration and Congress implement real change that makes healthcare more affordable for working Americans.</p>
<p>According to a recent NFIB survey, 81 percent of small business owners and 52 percent of employees do not feel the presidential candidates are adequately addressing issues that are important to them, specifically healthcare. In fact, nearly three-quarters of those polled say fixing healthcare should be a top priority for the next president, and nearly 80 percent agree that &#8220;it is important to me to vote for a presidential candidate whose healthcare plan makes sense for small business.&#8221;</p>
<p>A similar survey showed that the small business community comprised 43 percent of U.S. registered voters and nearly 32 percent of the electorate on Super Tuesday. These numbers prove that small business is a powerful, motivated group in a position to demand substantial solutions to the healthcare crisis from their candidates.</p>
<p>Both candidates are focused on reforming our ailing healthcare system and have begun to recognize that small business must be considered in any proposed legislation. The National Small Business Summit may have ended, but small business&#8217; commitment to achieving quality, affordable healthcare has not.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re at the beginning of long and productive discussions with both candidates to ensure the needs of small businesses remain at the forefront of the healthcare debate. Because we know that solutions to America&#8217;s healthcare crisis must start with small businesses, the backbone of the U.S. economy. When healthcare is fixed for small business, it will be fixed for America.</p>
